It breaks down into 3 parts, being the;
sign - small, insignificant detail - e.g. wearing a coat
code - slightly more important than a sign, the connotation of the sign- e.g. their cold
convention - what it menas in relation to the genre/topic
If you are to change certain bits from the convention it can change the whole meaning of the code.
Knife + Women + Bright Dress = mum, making sandwiches
Knife + Guy + Dark Coat = murderer, horror
The whole genre can be changed by the signs and codes you use, so you need to understand what codes create your genre such as the first choice above.
